I do magic not to make money or become famous or be well liked. I do magic to make people smile.
When I first started performing magic over 30 years ago I thought I would have a second career to supplement my income and expand my horizons. Well I’ve expanded my horizons big time but found the money part of it not to my liking. I’ve done kid’s parties, Lion’s Clubs, Rotary, and Elk Clubs.
But my specialty is being a magical MC. As you all know I do magic at golf awards dinners both locally and in Reno at the “Del Bonta Golf Classic” every year but it all started when I was asked to do a piano recital for my wife and mother-in-law who are both piano instructors. This was back in 1983 and I really enjoyed doing them. I try to relate a lot of the magic to music, which isn’t hard to do.
I introduce the performers and do tricks between the performances. We find the students are more relaxed and looking forward to the next trick. The parents often ask me what new illusions will I be doing this year?
In 1982 I became a member of the IBM and learned right away to keep it simple. Some magicians make it way too complicated. Then I became involved in magic clubs becoming president of Ring 38, San Francisco, for 5 years. My greatest honor was being voted in as a Magician Member of the Magic Castle in 2001.
This year, at my wife’s studio’s recital I did 7 tricks including Katsuya Masuda’s “WOW” and Bob Holdridge’s version of ESP prediction. I’m fond of Masuda’s effects and own several of them. When I started doing recitals my magic wasn’t as sophisticated and I did things like Needle through balloon, Hippity Hoppity Rabbits and Color Wheel. Now my magic is much more interesting. I usually use one McComical style trick in the act, they always gets a surprise response. My tricks are always fast with very little patter. That’s another way I keep it simple and make them smile.
